It is unknown to many people that they can adapt to poorly ventilated environments such as ponds with stagnant water.Īside from being known as sludge worms, they are also identified as blood worms because of their distinct red color caused by high hemoglobin levels compared to other worm species. Unlike other worms that need a lot of oxygen to survive and breathe, the Tubifex is quite the opposite. One of the main reasons is that they are found in mudwater or sewers and thrive on dirty organic matter. There are a lot of articles that have been published all over the internet stating that Tubifex can be harmful to fishes. Tubifex worms are found along polluted riverbeds, manholes, drainage, and other shallow bodies of water that are stagnant and polluted. You would see them clumped together, looking like large-sized red pancakes. The average size of a tubifex worm would be one centimeter, but they can grow up to a maximum of nine centimeters long.
Another similarity with earthworms is they tend to move their bodies a lot. Upon closer inspection, you would see a prominent mouth that is used for burrowing. They are round-shaped worms that do not possess any extremities at all. Each segment contains viable body organs, including the egg and sperm cells used for reproduction since they are classified as hermaphrodites. The first thing that you would notice is the numerous segments covering almost 90 percent of their body. Tubifex has some similarities with earthworms in terms of physical appearance. This article will share some of the things I learned about Tubifex and whether it is safe to use as food for your fishes. Some hobbyist even told me that you could easily catch this worm and save money on fish foods. But I was told that I should look more into Tubifex since it is known to be rich in protein essential to the growth of my fishes. I use to feed my pets the usual kind of pellets bought in the pet shop. My curiosity with Tubifex began five years ago when I started taking care of tiny goldfishes and bettas in my pond and aquarium. It is scientifically known as “tubificid annelids,” or they are popularly called sludge worms in layman’s term.
